Your Trusted Guide to Wine Glasses in Canada
Silicone wine glasses for outdoor use are flexible, unbreakable drinking vessels moulded from food-grade silicone, a synthetic rubber-like polymer. They’re built to survive coolers, canoe bottoms and cottage docks. Some are stemless tumblers, others fold flat. All of them replace shatter-prone glass at picnics, campsites and beaches without giving up the small ceremony of a … Read more
Picture the scene. The fire is crackling, the sky is doing that deep-blue trick it does around 9 p.m., and someone’s elbow meets a wine glass balanced on a stump. Crack. Now you’re picking shards out of the pine needles by headlamp. It’s a sound every camper dreads, and it’s entirely avoidable. That’s the pitch … Read more
An acrylic wine glasses set is a matched group of reusable wine glasses moulded from clear, shatter-resistant plastic instead of blown glass. Most are made from acrylic (PMMA) or Tritan copolyester. They look close to glass, weigh a fraction as much, and survive drops onto decks, docks and driveways. Here’s the scene every Canadian host … Read more
Stainless steel wine tumblers are stemless, double-wall vacuum-insulated cups made from food-grade steel, usually 18/8 (also called 304), built to hold wine near its poured temperature for hours. Unlike glass, they shrug off drops, resist condensation, and go wherever glass is banned: docks, decks, beaches and campsites. 🍷 Anyone who has watched a stemmed glass … Read more
Machine-made wine glasses vs handblown is really a question about how a glass is formed: a mould and compressed air in a factory, or a glassmaker’s breath and hands, one piece at a time. Machine-made glasses are consistent, sturdy and affordable. Handblown glasses are usually lighter and finer, and they cost more because of the … Read more
Tempered glass wine glasses are heat-treated, then rapidly cooled, so the surface sits in compression and the core in tension. The payoff is better resistance to knocks and thermal shock, and a tendency to break into small, blunt pieces. This overview of tempered glass covers the physics. Now picture a January dinner party in Winnipeg: … Read more
Heat-resistant glass wine glasses are drinking vessels made from borosilicate (or similarly low-expansion) glass that can hold hot liquids such as mulled wine, hot toddies and tea without cracking from thermal shock. Many are double-walled, so the outside stays comfortable to hold while the drink inside stays warm. Here is the Canadian problem in one … Read more
Be honest. Your current wine glasses are a mismatched crew: one inherited, one freebie from a liquor-store promo, one that has survived three moves and a mildly dramatic dishwasher cycle. They get the job done. They also make a Tuesday-night pour taste a little flat. What are wine glasses for everyday use? They are sturdy, … Read more
Our summers are short. Nobody wants to spend a golden Saturday on their knees, picking Merlot-soaked slivers out of the gaps between deck boards. Or draining a pool. In August 2022, one glass bottle shattered on the deck at Kingston’s Culligan Water Park. Several days of cleaning attempts failed, so the city drained the whole … Read more
Glass wine glasses are stemmed or stemless drinking vessels made from soda-lime glass, crystal or lead-free crystal. They are shaped to funnel aroma toward your nose, show off a wine’s colour and clarity, and keep your hand’s warmth away from the pour. In Canada they range from sturdy dozen-packs to feather-light, mouth-blown showpieces. Here’s what … Read more
